TEAM Maxus


Bill Laidlaw
Bill Laidlaw with over 32 years’ experience in automotive industry, trucks, vans, fleet, service, rental in commercial vehicles sector.   Since joining the Maxus family in 2017 as Dealer development manager, Bill then progressed to Maxus UK Sales Manager.   Bill is a specialist on EV LCV sales, charging, infrastructure and training.  Bill is really enjoying the Maxus Journey and working with our customers and partners on creating and providing the perfect solutions in electric with our range of Maxus vehicles.  The EVROS rally gives us great exposure to show off our range and put the e DELIVER 3 & e deliver 9 through their paces.  It will be great to get the feedback from the other drivers and their experience of our model range on the route.

John Corbett
On a personal note John Corbett, 52 years old & has been married for 27 years, 2 kids Daniel 28 and Becky 25 and an 8 year old granddaughter Ruby who keeps him on his toes.    John got a new outlook on life this year as he spent 10 days in critical care last November with Covid-19 Pneumonia and had a very lucky escape.   John sales manager at Northside Maxus is loving Maxus vans and the Maxus Brand and has been in the motor industry since leaving school 36 years ago so he can honestly say it is in his blood.   John is really enjoying the whole new EV rush and can’t wait to see where the journey takes us next.    In his personal time John follows Stoke City for his sins.

Paul Kirby
Paul Kirby, now working freelance, has been working within the Van Sector for nearly 20 years. Having driven his first electric van in 2004, he is really excited to be taking one of the most capable electric vans on the market around this iconic route, proving that Electric Vans have greater potential TODAY than many give credit for.    Paul’s aim is to help fleets accelerate the transition to electric, both improving air quality and reducing climate change.    Demonstrating the capabilities of the Maxus range on this trip will certainly help the cause, not to mention, give great real world experiences to share!

Sara Sloman
Sara Sloman with a background in public and private sector consultancy roles primarily serving Local Authorities, she has been involved in delivering sustainability centred infrastructure projects for over fifteen years.   Sara brings an understanding of the lifecycle of infrastructure funding and the necessary steps required to successfully implement an effective Sustainability strategy.   Sara has worked for the for the Local Sustainable Transport Fund and was honoured to be leading on elements of the Go Ultra Low West project in the West of England.   Sara was proud to be part of the Energy and Infrastructure team at leading law firm, Foot Anstey LLP, where I was able to see every side of the infrastructure debate from developer to landlord, local authority partnerships through to consultancy services.   Sara is a believer in supporting all modes of transport for a sustainable future and my passion is in clean energy and zero emission mobility. Named as EV Champion in 2018 and featuring on the GreenFleet “100 Most influential” list in 2019, 2020 and 2021, I am very excited for the future to help fleets convert away from ICE vehicles and I am looking forward to trying out the Maxus models e DELIVER 3 & e DELIVER 9 on the route delighted to be part of the EVROS Rally.

Phil Harvey
Phil Harvey is the Fleet Sales Manager for MAR Vehicle Solutions Ltd and has been involved in the Motor Industry for 30 years and has been part of the EV Journey with MAXUS since 2017. He is relishing the challenge of showing how capable and efficient the MAXUS range of electric vehicles are driving around some of the most scenic yet demanding routes around Scotland. He has two children Caitlin 12 and Kian 6 who are looking forward to following his progress around the 1,200 mile route. In his spare time Phil is an avid golfer.

Adam Hay-Nicholls is a writer and media consultant specialising in motoring, Formula One racing, culture, travel, luxury and adventure. An editor, visual director and producer who has worked with some of the world’s most talented writers, photographers and designers. Adam is taking part in EVROS on behalf of Metro who he writes for. He has been covering Extreme E (Electric SUVs rallying around the world at the hands of Sebastian Loeb, Carlos Sainz plus other) for the Times. Locations include Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Greenland, Sardinia and, in December, Dorset!  ​

Tom Exton is a YouTuber (TGE TV) and founder of fitness brand LDN Muscle. Tom is well known in the community for investing in the latest and greatest supercars as well as modern classics. He is a true enthusiast which is why he possesses one of the most loyal and engaged fanbases on all his social media platforms. Tom was working a city job as an investment banker whilst running his fitness company LDN Muscle and spent the majority of his earnings on cars. But it was that rare business mindset that allowed him to spot the opportunity to make money from it. “I rolled a business and passion, into one”.​

Lauren Mitchell is a Radio Presenter who for the  last 6 years, Lauren has been working in her dream job as a breakfast show Presenter on Northsound 1 as one half of ‘Jeff and Lauren’ in the morning. Lauren is also a digital marketing geek. After completing her Media degree at Robert Gordon University, she continued her studies and achieved an MSc in Digital Marketing. She decided to launch her own. Lauren is also gluten free.​

Jack McKeown is a Motoring Editor and Features Writer for the Dundee Courier and Aberdeen Press and Journal. He is taking part in EVROS on behalf of the two titles he writes for and is bringing his other half (Eilidah Moir) with him.  ​

Rory White is a motoring journalist and deputy editor at YesAuto. He is taking part in the EVROS rally for Yes Auto and interested to see how Scotland's charging infrastructure is developing. Rory will also be reviewing the single motor Polestar 2 as part of his coverage. He has written prolifically for automotive titles including Car Wow, Autocar and What Car?   ​

Team Kia


David Gillanders is an experienced car industry specialist. He was a Dealer Principle of a Major Dealership in the North East of Scotland for over 50 years. He was also a British Rally Champion and a Scottish Rally Champion. His motorsport career saw him compete in all types of events in the UK, South Africa and the Middle East.

Graham Neish is an ex engineer who has lived and worked all over the world. He has driven many types of vehicles in the different locations he has visited and worked. He was a co-driver to David for a part of David’s career and competed in numerous rallies in the UK.

David and Graham last competed successfully on the Scottish Rally in 1986 which had a similar route to the EVROS Route. They are excited about driving the latest technology from KIA, the EV6. The key objective is to evaluate the cars performance against the harsh winter environment of Scotland.

Martin Symes heads up SWARCO Smart Charging UK Operations, having spent the last 18 years managing operations across a variety of different verticals including Logistics, Advertising, Digital Signage, AV and Digital Workspace before moving into EV. Martin has a passion for operations and especially the people. Outside of work Martin has a farm where he and his family run a horse retirement facility in the Buckinghamshire countryside, his partner and one (so far) of his young daughters also keep their horses there and ride locally. Aside from horses they also have other animals including chickens, goats, cats and dogs too. He hopes an Electric Tractor to be his next new toy!
Linda Grave is an experienced consultant helping companies navigate the complex world of EV Charging Infrastructure.
She’s an entrepreneur who has built successful companies within the renewable energy and EV sectors over a 18-year period. Having built the EV Driver network of public EV charging points in the East of England, which she sold in 2020. She’s a pioneer in EV roaming and interoperability passionate about ensuring the barriers to access are lowered and customer satisfaction is paramount.
Sam Clarke is a life-long entrepreneur, EV evangelist, industry advisor and EV driver for nearly 20 years. He was a 2015 winner at the Great British Entrepreneurs Awards and in 2021 was voted #17 in the top 100 most influential people in Low Carbon Fleets. In 2009 he founded the all-electric delivery firm Gnewt in doing so creating the UK’s largest fully electric commercial fleet, the largest privately-owned smart charging infrastructure and UK’s most advanced private V2G network of its time. Sam is also a regular public speaker and is a founding member of The EV Café and has featured on programmes such as Fully Charged on multiple occasions. Most recently, Sam extended his Board advisory capacity within GRIDSERVE to become their Chief Vehicle Officer. His role is to drive forward mass uptake of electric vehicles through the creation of a net zero EV leasing division, commercial charging infrastructure builds and support the nationwide network roll out of high-powered Electric Forecourts as well as the upgrade of the Electric Highway service station network.
David Ward is the Commercial Director for Newsquest Scotland, joining in 2011, he has taken up several senior roles across our brand portfolio. He has led Newsquest’s commercial content strategy since Jan 17 and launched, government backed, campaigns such as ‘The Future of Education’, ‘Climate for Change’ and ‘Entrepreneur’. He is responsible for commercial strategy, digital transformation and P&L performance of brand portfolio that includes The Herald, Glasgow Times, The National, Business HQ, s1homes and s1cars. David is married with twin boys, age 5. David has a passion for sport, travel and food and regularly researches his next adventure.





Mark Nichol – Head Of Car Content
Mark Nichol is Vanarama’s video presenter and Car Content Editor. A car journalist since 2007, when he was coaxed away from his degree course by Auto Express, Mark has spent the last 14 years creating written and video content for a huge range of magazines, national newspapers and websites. They include The Sun, The Guardian, The Independent, Yahoo, AOL, Top Gear, Carbuyer, Car Magazine and Honest John. Mark’s car video content has twice won recognition at the prestigious Newspress car industry awards, ahead of the likes of Top Gear and Carwow.

Matt Robinson - Car Web Editor
Matt Robinson is an experienced motoring journalist who has been working in the industry since 2003. In that time, he has test-driven thousands of different cars, including many of the latest wave of electric vehicles (EVs) which form the future of personal transportation. He has written for outlets including Autocar, Auto Express, Auto Trader, BBC Top Gear Magazine, CAR, The Sun, The Telegraph, Evo, Parkers and more, and has a wealth of knowledge on most vehicles built from the 1970s onwards – from the smallest, most affordable city runarounds, right up to supercars and high-end luxury machines.

The AA


Edmund King is President of the Automobile Association and Director of the AA Charitable Trust for Road Safety and the Environment. He is also a Visiting Professor of Transport at Newcastle University. He has written several reports on transport and often appears as a transport commentator on radio, television, and podcasts. He was an advisor to the Citizens Assembly UK on climate change and drives an EV. He was awarded an OBE for ‘services to road safety’ in 2016. He was runner-up in the Wolfson Economics Prize 2017 alongside his wife, Deirdre, for their thesis on ‘Road Miles’. In 2020 he was inducted into the PRWeek ‘Hall of Fame’ and with his team won the PRWeek Best Public Affairs Campaign and PRCA Best Automotive Campaign for their work on ‘smart’ motorways.

A graduate from the University of London, Gavin holds a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is a qualified accountant. He has presented and written on subjects as diverse as the blurring of HR and IT, the role of the CIO, customer service and the digital journey, driverless cars and technology deployment. Gavin has spent almost 20 years working in senior positions within BT and O2, including Managing Director of O2 Wifi and Telefonica UK, before joining the AA back in 2019 as Director of Business Services.

With more than 25 years’ in the motor industry, spanning fleet management, vehicle funding, sales and team leadership, Dean has extensive knowledge of the specialist needs of public sector, corporate, SME and operational fleets. He joined the AA in 2018, and, most recently, took on an EV advocacy role, speaking alongside fellow industry leaders on platforms with the Renewable Energy Association, Green Fleet, Solar Media, Green TV, the EV Café and many more. In collaboration with the AA’s senior management team, Dean is responsible for delivering new product and services innovation, focusing on EV capability in managed services, customer experience and digital integration.
